The day

NYC sheds some humidity: clouds giving way to sun, a dry high near 85°F and a low around 69°F. Today is easy; Sunday is the weekend wrinkle, with rain most plausible in the morning. NWS

Today is the 25th anniversary of September 11. The commemoration begins at 8:40 a.m. and can be watched live through the 9/11 Memorial. If you are heading downtown, expect the Memorial plaza to remain closed to the public until 3 p.m., the 1 train to bypass WTC Cortlandt and street restrictions south of Canal; the Tribute in Light returns from sunset to dawn. Practical details

Reporting checked through 6:15 a.m. ET.

The first ninety seconds

OpenAI’s finance launch is really a data-rights product. ChatGPT for Financial Services packages Astra with hosted Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News and Crunchbase data, plus entitlement links to existing subscriptions. The quietly important document is the new terms: Nasdaq data is at least 15 minutes delayed, Daloopa 24 hours, and an export button does not confer permission to train, store or redistribute partner data. The interface is new; licensing has retained its traditional suspicion of convenience. Product, terms

“Market-neutral” is having an expensive encounter with the AI factor. PivotalPath says the average market-neutral fund is up less than 4% this year and has lost money in the third quarter to date. Press-reported manager figures sharpen the point: Freestone Grove lost 4.4% in August and is down 5.3% YTD; Holocene lost roughly 2% in August and is down more than 5%. Woodline’s main hedge fund is up only 2%, while its US long-only fund is up 13.5%. Same stock-picking shop, rather different bill for removing beta. Business Insider, September 10

The women’s final is set—and America is out. Elena Rybakina beat Coco Gauff 3–6, 6–4, 6–4 after repeatedly leaning on Gauff’s forehand; Aryna Sabalenka dispatched Jessica Pegula 7–5, 6–2. Saturday now gives us the outgoing No. 1 against the incoming No. 1, and Sabalenka trying for a third consecutive US Open. It is the first year since 2006 without an American woman in any major final. Reuters

The Melbourne game was also an experiment in circadian risk. San Francisco beat the Rams 27–7 after arriving a week early; Los Angeles landed only 28 hours before kickoff. Brock Purdy threw three touchdowns, the 49ers ran for 174 yards and Christian McCaffrey produced 88 total yards. One game cannot estimate the travel effect, but it may have just rewritten every operations memo for future international fixtures. AP, box-score account

A broker says AI has now handled an options trade end to end. BGC’s Aurel subsidiary says Fenics AI managed price discovery through execution for a September 3 Eurex Swiss SMI-options trade between two institutional accounts, including Hudson Bay Capital; client availability is targeted for Q4. No notional, instrument, price, liquidity, execution-quality measure or human-override detail was disclosed. It is a real workflow claim attached to an actual trade—and still a vendor press release with almost all the interesting fields redacted. BGC release via Markets Media, September 10

10 a.m.: the Feels decision. Public sale opens today for Animal Collective performing Feels at Knockdown Center on October 22. This is the original quartet’s first full-group performance since 2022, with the 2005 album played in full plus other material. I could not verify price or pre-sale inventory before the public on-sale; treat 10 a.m. as the useful moment, not as proof that a static ticket link contains seats. Official announcement

CME has put December 7 on Treasury clearing’s calendar—with an asterisk. Subject to remaining approvals, CME Securities Clearing plans to support cash Treasuries and repo, “done-with” and “done-away,” with eligible cross-margining against CME rate futures. The dates that force attention are December 31 for eligible cash trades and June 30, 2027 for eligible repo. A second clearing route can add resilience and negotiating leverage; capital relief still depends on membership, eligible positions and operational readiness, not the press release’s fondness for the word “efficient.” CME announcement via Markets Media

The market-neutral scorecard says more about hedging than stock selection

Here is the compact tape, all press-reported rather than manager-disclosed; exact vehicles, share classes and net/gross bases were not established:

Manager / reported vehicle August 2026 YTD
Freestone Grove −4.4% −5.3%
Holocene flagship ~−2% worse than −5%
Cinctive flat +4%
Woodline main hedge fund not given +2%
Woodline US equity long-only not given +13.5%

The interesting comparison is Woodline’s internal dispersion. It does not show that the long-only team is “better”: the mandates have different beta, drawdown and capital objectives. It does suggest that this year’s costly component is not simply idea generation. Neutralization, short-book selection, factor crowding and the opportunity cost of hedging an AI-driven long book deserve separate attribution.

That distinction matters for both risk budgets and talent economics. If most alpha is arriving through longs exposed to the same dominant theme, a market-neutral mandate can look prudently diversified while repeatedly paying to remove the source of return. Conversely, letting the factor run turns “alpha” into a flattering name for a crowded exposure. The useful review is a decomposition by long alpha, short alpha, factor hedge and financing—not another ranking of logos. Underlying September 10 reporting

ChatGPT for finance: the control plane matters more than the demo

OpenAI has aimed the first version squarely at investment banking and equity research, shaped with Morgan Stanley and Evercore. The visible attractions are obvious: hosted premium datasets, more than 50 connectors, granular citations, and firm-controlled Excel, Word and PowerPoint templates. The less photogenic features are more consequential for an enterprise: role-based app actions, exportable compliance logs, configurable retention and separate workspaces for information barriers. OpenAI, September 10

The product collapses three procurement problems—model, licensed information and analyst tooling—into one surface. That may speed adoption, but it also creates a lineage problem. A research answer can blend public documents, hosted partner data and a firm’s own files; the final spreadsheet may look homogeneous while each cell carries different rights and freshness.

The new partner terms make that concrete. PitchBook data may be used for internal research, but not to train or ground a model, populate another database, reconstruct the dataset or export substantial raw portions. Reuters data and output based on it cannot be used to train persistent AI models. OpenAI also warns that a source timestamp does not guarantee the generated answer reflects the latest market state. Financial Services Terms

For a risk-and-research organization, the implementation question is therefore not merely whether the answer cites its sources. It is whether source identity, effective timestamp and usage rights survive into derived tables, copied cells, downstream agents and archived artifacts. The sensible pilot is a bounded equity-research workflow with gold answers, entitlement tests and output-lineage logs—not a general permission to pour every licensed terminal into an agent.

The objection is fair: much of this already exists in data-governance policy, and OpenAI’s product page does not prove retrieval accuracy or analyst productivity. But consolidating the workflow makes weak controls easier to scale as well as good ones. Convenience is leverage; it does not specify which direction.

Wu’s Dynasty brings the dim-sum cart back uptown

Derek Wu, formerly the public face of Wu’s Wonton King, opened an 8,000-square-foot Cantonese dining room at 210 West 70th Street last week. (Some listings say 208; both lead to the same storefront.) Push carts run daily in the late morning and early afternoon; the current menu has 55 dim-sum choices across four price bands, plus live seafood. Opening report, menu and address audit

A sensible first visit is four to six people at 10–10:30 a.m., before carts thin out and the room becomes a weekend referendum. Start with har gow, pan-fried shrimp-and-chive dumplings and a seafood cheong fun; if the table wants a centerpiece, ask the per-pound weight and total price before ordering a live steamed fish. Confirm no pork fat or meat stock in sauces and wrappers. Skip the custard lava buns and any egg-forward specials.

There is no serious critical verdict yet, so this is an early, convenient try rather than a coronation. The room’s scale should suit a lively family or friends meal better than a quiet two-person dinner. Daily hours are reported as 10 a.m.–10 p.m.; walk-ins are accepted. West Side Rag

Groupe’s blue linen bomber: try 52 and 54, then decide

View original image: Seize sur Vingt Ribeira blue linen bomber

The Seize sur Vingt Ribeira Bomber is $440, down from $960: a denim-blue, oxford-weave linen from Dugdale Bros, finished in Portugal with a breathable mesh lining and matte corozo buttons. This is a refined classic with one interesting construction idea—the ease of a bomber, the cloth of a summer jacket, no collaboration logo asking to be thanked. Exact item

The fit requires an actual fitting. Groupe’s general tailored chart maps EU 52 to US 41 with a 43.25-inch garment chest, and EU 54 to US 43 with a 45-inch chest. Both 52 and 54 were listed as selectable with Add to Cart enabled this morning, but the page does not publish bomber-specific shoulder or length measurements. Size chart

Verdict: GO TRY, not blind buy. The 54 may give the intended layering ease; the 52 may be cleaner over a shirt. Groupe is at 198 Bowery, Monday–Saturday 11:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Sale returns are store credit only within 14 days, require prior authorization and cannot be altered by the shop. At 54% off, the cloth and make earn attention; the return policy removes the case for optimism-by-checkout. Store, returns

Courtside

Today is the American semifinal, but fatigue is part of the draw. Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton both came through four-and-a-half-hour quarterfinals; Shelton’s ended at 3:33 a.m. after he removed Carlos Alcaraz, while Tiafoe recovered from two sets down against Alex Michelsen. The other semifinal is Alexander Zverev–Karen Khachanov; Zverev leads their rivalry 6–3, although Khachanov advanced when Alexander Blockx retired and should be the fresher man. Reuters preview

Tennis Abstract’s current Elo draw forecast gives Shelton 61.7% against Tiafoe and Zverev 89.2% against Khachanov. That makes Shelton–Tiafoe the match to watch and the recovery assumption to interrogate: generic Elo does not know whose 4½ hours were more expensive. Forecast, method

BETTING — PASS at this cutoff. The independent probabilities are usable as a prior, but I could not verify a timestamped, executable FanDuel or DraftKings line or an eligible boost. Without the offered price—and without a supported conservative adjustment for the two Americans’ recovery—there is no honest expected-value claim or buy threshold. A nationally resonant semifinal is not improved by pretending attention itself is an edge. ESPN has the US coverage. Viewing guide

Listen: The Tubs, “Who’s Gonna Love You Now?”

The London band’s third album, Hard Life, is out today. Start with the three-minute official Bandcamp track, then decide whether to take the full record.

The Guardian’s first review hears bright pre-Madchester jangle—12-string guitars and fiddle—under Owen Williams’s bleak, self-lacerating comedy. That combination is the fit: Libertines/Wilco-adjacent guitar energy with a lyricist using his own defects as material. It is daytime music, not a substitute for the nocturnal Portishead/Chromatics axis. Review, September 10, album

One useful future note: the band lists Le Poisson Rouge on November 11. That is an artist itinerary, not verified ticket inventory; it goes on the watchlist rather than becoming a booking claim.

Watch now: The Paper, season 2

Peacock US subscription; ten episodes, 23–27 minutes each; all available now. Start with episode one, “The Best of Us” (24 minutes), rather than accepting the platform’s invitation to surrender four hours. Watch on Peacock

The struggling Toledo newspaper remains the comic engine, but the early review says season two is sharper and warmer about journalism while letting Sabrina Impacciatore’s Esmeralda remain gloriously disruptive. That makes it a good Friday counterweight to yesterday’s Call My Agent! recommendation: another institution populated by vanity and people who still care about the work. First review

The caveat is familiar with mockumentaries: if second-hand embarrassment begins to feel like an endurance sport, stop after one. This is the light, low-commitment choice tonight; Slow Horses season 6 remains the higher-stakes queue item for September 16.
