The morning

New York starts warm: upper 60s around dawn, mostly sunny, then upper 70s to low 80s with west winds and afternoon gusts up to 20 mph. Tonight cools sharply toward the upper 50s. NWS forecast

Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 3–1 last night, tying the ALCS at 1–1. Tonight Milwaukee, already up 2–0, visits Los Angeles for Game 3 at 8:00 p.m. ET on FS1; Mitchell Gasser and Blake Snell are the listed starters. MLB postseason

The bank quarter is more uneven than the forecast

Citi reported $23.8 billion of revenue, $5.2 billion of net income, $2.85 EPS and 11.5% RoTCE. JPMorgan posted $50.2 billion of revenue, $15.3 billion of net income and $5.57 EPS; average loans rose 10% year over year, but credit costs reached $2.7 billion. Goldman generated $18.68 billion of revenue, $5.29 billion of net income, $17.01 EPS and 18.7% annualized ROE. These are distinct earnings engines, not one interchangeable “strong banks” story. Asia's hedge-fund interest is showing up in target allocations, not just performance tables

Reuters reports that HFR measured a record $409 billion quarterly increase in global hedge-fund assets, to $5.6 trillion in Q2. Indonesia's Danantara is aiming for 5% exposure; some first-time institutional users are considering roughly 10%. UBP says hedge-fund-only mandates among its Asia discretionary clients have more than tripled since end-2024, though it did not give the underlying count. Reuters · HFR

Andy Pavlo on agents and databases

What Happens When Billions of AI Agents Hit Your Database? with Andy Pavlo, published October 8, 1 hour 17 minutes. I assessed the publisher's description and chapters, not the audio. Start at 10:51 for the claimed 10–100× query-volume increase, 23:14 for MCP and text-to-SQL, or 33:52 for the claim that LLMs can reach roughly 85% of database-tuning quality in 15 minutes. The publisher discloses FirstMark's investment in ClickHouse. Publisher page · Apple Podcasts

The Neanderthal material record has a wooden blind spot

At Abric Romaní near Barcelona, researchers documented 597 wooden remains or imprints across 16 archaeological levels dated roughly 62,000–40,000 years ago. Thirteen showed deliberate modification, including spears, possible digging sticks, structural poles, bark objects and a mace-shaped object. Calcium-carbonate deposits preserved molds after much of the wood decayed. Science Advances record · IPHES

An everyday-and-divine visual system

the Whitney's eighth-floor Minnie Evans retrospective runs through January 10. Evans began drawing in 1935, then built dense worlds from eyes, angels, plants, Afro-Caribbean heritage, religion and the decorative environment she encountered while working at Wilmington's Airlie estate. The material history sharpens the mysticism: wartime shortages constrained her early crayons; Mosquito Bombs (1943) turns an enemy-aircraft dream into a flowering garden; 1966 New York museum visits pushed her toward larger cut-and-pasted compositions. The Whitney lists a 2:00 p.m. tour today, but capacity is unverified. Whitney overview · Early works · Collages

Design, without a deadline

Van Alen's Open Access asks five artist/design teams to read 130 years of competition boards and jury records for both evidence and absence. Two especially tangible devices: paper-pulp and clay “core samples” of past proposals, and a three-CRT/microfiche installation tracking colonial language in Paris Prize material. It runs through November 13 at 303 Bond Street. Van Alen

A street-design result, not a rendering

NYC DOT says the permanent Avenue B redesign is complete from East 4th to East 14th Streets. Every intersection now has protected pedestrian extensions; loading zones sit at each block's ends; traffic-direction changes between East 7th and East 10th discourage through driving while preserving local and emergency access. The two-way cycling route is one piece of a fuller low-traffic system. NYC DOT, October 13

Movement as psychology

the free NYPL Performing Arts exhibition on Martha Graham runs at Lincoln Center through November 7. Its centennial view uses Graham's archive, Isamu Noguchi set pieces and Graham-designed costumes to show how her 1926 company replaced ballet's inherited vocabulary with a codified language meant to put emotion, memory and the unconscious onstage. The sets and clothing make that formal change visible as a collaboration of body, space and material. NYPL · Exhibition guide

Cooper Hewitt’s Design Across Time

At Cooper Hewitt, Design Across Time avoids the usual march through periods. More than 125 works from the museum's 215,000-plus-object collection are arranged under five design verbs—Play and Tweak, Repeat, Transform, Show Off and Simplify—so iterations, ornament, material changes and information reduction can meet across centuries. Two long vitrines cut through the Carnegie Mansion's first floor; the range runs from an ancient Egyptian lotus-shaped cup to Toots Zynsky's 2023 glass vessel Aurifero II. The multi-year installation includes objects newly out of storage and acquisitions appearing publicly for the first time. Exhibition · Installation and collection detail

Titán’s seafood and DUMBO patio

Titán, at 5 Front Street in DUMBO, is today's fresh dining watch. The strongest leads are a $26 trio of red, green and black snapper aguachiles, $22 masa-tempura pescado tacos, and the reported tree-and-vine patio. The grilled branzino comes with cheese-filled masa dumplings and epazote aioli, making it a dairy-containing dish in the published description. Sauce, fat and current reservation details remain unverified. Official site · Time Out · The Infatuation

Lady White Co. and Phigvel’s denim blouson

Lady White Co. and Phigvel's black hooded denim blouson is a design watch, not a buy signal: $500, Japanese 12-ounce selvedge denim, wide/cropped cut, engineer cuffs, pleated patch pockets, and moleskin lining in the hood and pockets. The official page lists sizes 1 (36) through 4 (42), but garment measurements and live checkout stock were not verified. The cropped body is the fit question. Lady White Co.

Space Afrika’s Quiet Storm

Space Afrika released Quiet Storm on September 25. Pitchfork's October 13 review gives it 7.4 and describes a Manchester short-film score built from classical instrumentation and field recordings; the Bandcamp page credits Glenn Ligon's Figure #30 for the cover. This is an exploratory listen, not a claim that I heard it. Bandcamp · Pitchfork
