The day

NYC turns warmer: partly sunny, high near 86°F, low around 73°F, with southerly gusts reaching roughly 21 mph. Daytime should stay dry; the first meaningful shower chance is toward dawn Thursday, so the useful accessory is water, not an umbrella. NWS

Reporting checked through 6:17 a.m. ET.

India’s close briefly became an 850-point opinion poll.

On Tuesday’s weekly derivatives expiry, the Nifty’s indicative level swung from 23,805.65 to 23,374.70 during the new closing auction before finishing at 23,635.10, close to the continuous-session level; auction turnover was ₹2,099 crore, more than twice Monday’s. On September 3, a similar Sensex episode sent put premiums up 400–500% within minutes. Financial Express, September 8

SEBI’s mechanism, introduced for F&O stocks on August 3, ends continuous cash trading at 3:15 p.m. IST, sets an auction reference from the 3:00–3:15 VWAP with a ±3% band, and randomly closes order entry before matching. Derivatives remain open until 3:40. SEBI circular, January 16

The risk lesson is specific: the final print may look sensible while the indicative path destabilizes options, index hedges and automated controls. A replay that stores only the eventual auction uncross will miss the event. Capture indicative-price trajectories, amendments/cancels, participation and derivative markouts across the 3:15–3:40 feedback window. Closing auctions are meant to make the close harder to manipulate; the market has supplied a brisk peer review.

Cboe’s free backup port is really a control-design exercise.

Cboe Options has made immediately effective a fee-credit program for redundant logical ports created during an exchange-initiated protocol migration, such as BOEv2 to BOEv3. To receive the credit, a TPH must designate the port to the Trade Desk, cancel it within 30 calendar days, request the credit within 30 days after cancellation—and send orders or quotes through it only when an exchange migration problem prevents use of the new port. Cboe will inspect actual usage before crediting a later invoice. Member-initiated changes such as FIX-to-BOE do not qualify. SEC notice, September 1

Treat the redundant session as a break-glass route, not ordinary active-active capacity: explicit enablement, usage alarms, evidence retention, a decommission date and invoice reconciliation. One enthusiastic production test can turn the “free” port into a small lesson in why fee schedules belong in operational requirements.

August return tape: the missing denominator is Walleye.

Useful additions or completed YTD figures from the same September 3–4 scorecard, rather than another unchanged league table:

Reported manager / vehicle August 2026 YTD
Man Group 1783 +1.7% +8.9%
Dymon Asia −1.1% +6.3%
Point72 −0.2% +10.7%
Verition −0.8% +3.9%
Walleye −0.2% −0.3%

These are press-reported figures, not manager disclosures; exact vehicle/share class and net-versus-gross basis were not established. Business Insider scorecard

The conversation-worthy point is the dispersion, not that August was “quiet.” Point72’s small monthly loss sits atop a double-digit year; Walleye’s equally small loss leaves it slightly negative. Similar one-month numbers can describe very different capacity, risk-budget and payout conversations. Quantedge’s previously noted +42% YTD remains the outlier, but there is no new figure worth reprinting today.

Astra has already become the verifier.

OpenAI said yesterday that a still-training internal model—“significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra”—produced a finite-time-singularity proof for the forced three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes problem. The company released both a paper and a Lean formalization, but external mathematical review and Clay acceptance were not established at this cutoff. Lean verifies the encoded theorem against its assumptions; it does not certify that the encoding and the prize formulation are identical. OpenAI’s report, paper and Lean link

The operational detail is the real news for a research organization. OpenAI says the successful effort used roughly 10,000 concurrent agents, took 88 hours to reach the result and another 17 hours for Astra-assisted formalization, consuming about 2.7 million messages and 130 billion output tokens on Navier–Stokes alone. Agents worked in separate groups; Codex consolidated useful intermediate results and cross-pollinated them.

That is less “one model had an idea” than a new research-production architecture: branching search, a shared intermediate-results layer, selective recombination and a separate verifier. The enterprise implication is not to issue everyone 10,000 agents—an excellent way to turn inference into a utility bill—but to build provenance into the task graph: which assumptions entered each branch, which failed approaches were suppressed, what was independently checked, and how much reviewer time survived the speed-up. Yesterday’s Man Systematic item about preserving negative research suddenly looks less like knowledge management and more like infrastructure.

OpenAI’s evidence remains vendor evidence, and 130 billion tokens is expenditure, not scientific output. Still, the combination of a publishable artifact, formal proof and disclosed search process makes this materially stronger than a benchmark victory lap.

Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach returns to BAM with the people who actually speak the language.

The Philip Glass Ensemble, led by longtime music director Michael Riesman, performs a 50th-anniversary concert with an Es Devlin installation at the Howard Gilman Opera House, November 19–21. The clean planning candidate is Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m.; tickets start at $65, plus BAM’s listed fees. A Buy Tickets route is live, but I did not verify selectable seats. BAM

This is a catch-up discovery—the public sale began June 30—not a fresh drop. It survives the lateness because it is neither a generic Glass evening nor a full Wilson staging: the original ensemble’s accumulated performance knowledge, with Devlin translating the visual dimension. The caveat is substantial duration and repetition; one does not pop into Einstein after dinner in the usual sense.

CONDITIONAL — Patriots moneyline with FanDuel’s 50% profit boost.

Tonight’s opener is New England at Seattle, 8:20 p.m. ET. FanDuel’s official token applies to any eligible wager on the game with pre-boost odds of −200 or longer, has an account-specific maximum stake and expires at midnight; New York is eligible. Offer terms

The best use I found is the underdog moneyline if your FanDuel screen shows +140 or better. A 50% profit boost turns +140 into +210: 32.3% break-even. ESPN Analytics’ current matchup model gives New England 38.6%, implying about +19.7% expected return at the boosted price. On that point estimate, the purely mathematical pre-boost boundary is roughly +107; I would not use that thin boundary for a Week 1 forecast. A recent DraftKings listing showed +142, but it was not timestamped as a live executable quote, and I could not verify FanDuel’s actual line at cutoff. ESPN matchup, reported DraftKings market

Load-bearing checks: Patriots RB TreVeyon Henderson is out; Seattle safety Nick Emmanwori and WR Tory Horton are questionable. Recheck the actual token, line and final inactives before any action. This is buying promotional convexity on a model-supported underdog, not a claim that New England is secretly the better team. Official injury report

WATCH NOW — Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story (2018), Criterion Channel US subscription, 1h 45m.

Chris Sievey built Manchester cult figure Frank Sidebottom out of a giant papier-mâché head, outsider pop and weaponized naivety—then found the character swallowing the artist. It is a very particular British collision of music, absurdist comedy and identity, with enough melancholy to give the joke weight but not so much that the evening becomes homework. Watch on Criterion

The caveat: the documentary structure is more conventional than its subject, and 105 minutes is longer than yesterday’s 22-minute recommendation. Choose it when you want warmth and eccentricity, not menace.

QUEUE — Robert Wilson and the Civil Wars (1985), Criterion Channel US subscription, 94 minutes.

Howard Brookner follows Wilson trying to assemble a twelve-hour, six-country opera for the 1984 Olympics—and watches schedules, budgets and exhaustion defeat the vision. It is both an avant-garde portrait and an unusually good project-failure documentary. Watch before deciding on BAM’s Einstein: it will make the achieved collaboration look less inevitable, which is usually the more interesting way to see art.
