Widow’s Bay won 14 Emmys last night, the most ever for a comedy in a single season, including comedy series and acting awards for Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn. The trophies point toward an unusual premise: a skeptical mayor tries to turn an isolated New England island into a tourist destination while the residents insist it is cursed. They are, inconveniently, correct. AP Emmy report
Apple TV subscription; ten episodes, generally 36–41 minutes. Start with “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!” (41 minutes). Matthew Rhys plays municipal optimism against superstitious islanders, with Hiro Murai directing the opening episodes and Katie Dippold building each installment around a different local horror story. The tone is deadpan small-town comedy with an actual mystery underneath, closer to an eccentric genre piece than a prestige obligation. Watch on Apple TV, Apple’s series description, Guardian review
The season includes cannibal legends, monsters, cursed fog and some gore. Choose it if a funny, atmospheric mystery sounds appealing tonight and genuine scares are welcome. One episode is enough to tell whether the balance works for you.
