Released yesterday, “Seriously” is the third single from Surface, Echo & Sound, due October 30. Start with the official lyric video.
Sonic Seducer describes ringing guitars, a driving rhythm and an ’80s new-wave streak; Tom Smith describes a warmer, more hopeful direction than the band’s dark reputation might suggest. Sounds & Books similarly hears bright, anthemic guitar-pop. Those are the critics’ descriptions, rather than a claim that I have listened. September 15 coverage, first track appraisal
The appeal is straightforward: Smith’s baritone against something with forward motion and light in it. After several more ambient and nocturnal selections, this looks like a good change of pace without requiring an album-length commitment.
