Belmont Park reopened Friday after a $555 million reconstruction: $455 million in state lending and $100 million from the New York Racing Association. The old grandstand has given way to a more compact 300,000-square-foot building, a larger paddock and infield access. Only 6,000 people attended the capped debut; Japanese star Forever Young won the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup by 3¼ lengths. Reopening report, race result
The downsizing is sensible if ordinary racing no longer needs a 35,000-person monument.
