Aperture’s permanent home opened Friday at 380 Columbus Avenue, opposite the Museum of Natural History. Its first installation, Aperture Loves New York, brings together photographs by Diane Arbus, Dawoud Bey, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Deana Lawson, Stephen Shore and others, alongside the books through which Aperture championed them. Admission is free; the gallery and bookstore are closed today, then open Wednesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. Direct opening announcement
Its appeal comes from being a neighborhood institution. The 10,000-square-foot space includes a Dashwood Books collaboration and rotating displays from guest publishers; September’s selection comes from New Delhi’s Offset Projects. Twenty attentive minutes with two photographs, followed by a slow browse through books, is enough reason to go. You can return when the pictures start arguing with your first impression.
