Mitchell Dong is stepping down as chief executive of Pythagoras Investments to start an energy-trading venture. Eric Zhao, who joined the firm in 2014 after Société Générale, takes over. The modest return is informative. An arbitrage book can look dull precisely when it is doing its job, but 2.5% year to date leaves little room for operational friction, financing surprises or an investor deciding that cash is competitive enough. Dong’s move also joins two markets that increasingly share talent and machinery: fragmented venues, collateral-intensive positions, round-the-clock risk and a premium on reliable data. The unanswered question is whether the new energy business will be physical, financial or both. That distinction determines whether the edge travels with the trader or requires an entirely new operational spine.
