HBO Max in the US with a subscription; two episodes available, about 30 minutes each. Sharon Horgan plays Alex, a divorced London literary agent managing an adult son, aging parents, a boss who is also her closest friend and a promisingly unavailable Rupert Friend. HBO’s current-series listing, Sharon Horgan interview, first review
This is tonight’s choice because the commitment is light and the voice is specific. Horgan is good at letting competence and self-deception occupy the same scene; the show’s midlife premise gives her several institutions—family, work, romance—to puncture without turning the evening into homework. The caveat is familiar: if embarrassment around dating and family dependence reads as cringe rather than comedy, two episodes may be plenty. Start with one half hour and let the second earn itself.
