Iara is scheduled to open today, October 2, at 205 Allen Street near East Houston. Vitor Mendes, formerly of Theodora, puts Amazonian ingredients into Brazilian cooking: tucupi, fermented cassava juice, runs through the menu. A promising seafood route is the moqueca—dry-aged grouper with tucupi, vegetables, coconut and rice, quoted at $48 by Eater. There is also red-snapper ceviche with cashew and herbs, and a cassava crisp with scallops and charcoal-kissed pineapple. The published menu suggests several pescatarian options, but does not certify every broth or sauce free of egg or dairy. Hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 5–11 p.m. Treat this as a promising opening to watch; tonight is its first service, and table availability and a finished meal have not been verified.
