The cleanest hedge-fund signal is not “hedge funds won” or “hedge funds lost.” It is the spread between ways of taking risk. Reuters reports that fundamental equity long-short funds lost 0.55% on average in September while systematic equity long-short gained 3.46%, its best month of 2026. The MSCI World fell 1.3%.
The manager scorecard sharpens the point. Millennium was flat for September and up 8.1% year to date; Citadel's Wellington gained 1.1% and reached 13.4% YTD; ExodusPoint lost 0.7% and stood at 4.1% YTD; Schonfeld was flat and up 6.8% YTD. Those are not interchangeable outcomes from the same macro weather. Financing costs, fixed-income books and the fault line between AI hardware and software all mattered.
The operator's question for allocators is therefore about where apparent alpha came from. Systematic equity books benefited from dispersion; macro and trend benefited from short fixed income and long energy. A portfolio that merely looked “diversified by manager” could still have been concentrated by underlying shock. Reuters · Business Insider
