Balyasny has moved Peter Anderson from head of applied-AI research to head of autonomous strategies within its fundamental-equities business, according to an October 19 report by eFinancialCareers. Gearoid Murphy, formerly of Alphabet X, takes over the research role. Itamar Kestenbaum has joined in New York as a senior AI engineer after work in Meta infrastructure. The specific team and mandate matter: this is not a reported restructuring of Balyasny's separate systematic division, run by Francine Fang, and “autonomous strategies” is a title rather than proof that an autonomous trading system is operating live.

The personnel change is meaningful against the fund's stated approach to evaluation. In a September interview hosted by Anthropic, chief AI officer Charlie Flanagan described an in-house harness with finance-specific tasks, permission controls and human review. He cited thousands of verifiable tasks and a faster merger-arbitrage research workflow. Those figures are Balyasny's own account in a vendor-hosted interview; they are useful context for what the firm says it values, not independent evidence that the October role change produced a trading result. The observable October development is Anderson’s move from applied research into a specific investment business.
