Anthony Roth Costanzo's Countertenor is a listening choice for the breadth of its announced repertoire. Nonesuch's official album page ranges through arias by Glass, Mozart, Vivaldi and Monteverdi; Dowland and Morley; traditional Hawaiian material; and a new Osvaldo Golijov song. A Klaus Nomi-inspired “You Don't Own Me” and “Walk Like a Man” broaden the program further.
The attraction is the opportunity to hear a high voice move among traditions without treating genre borders as fixed barriers. That does not mean every selection shares the same vocal history. The Nomi-inspired track is an inviting starting point; “Walk Like a Man” provides another familiar title to hear in unfamiliar company. This is a selection based on the label's repertoire description, not a verdict from a completed listen.
