Thursday, from Wednesday evening

This edition is based on reporting checked through 7:14 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, October 28. The World Series item is explicitly a pre-Game-Five snapshot and is not a Thursday-morning result. Unsupported geography trivia was omitted as a complete question-and-answer pair. No purchase, reservation, playback, deployment, investment result or post-cutoff sports result is claimed.

OKXICE’s Proposed Tokenized-Securities Venue

We begin with companies objecting to a new venue for tokens backed by their shares. The proposed OKXICE tokenized-securities venue now names 33 objecting issuers in its public notice. CoinDesk reports seven additions: JPMorgan, AMD, Applied Materials, Coca-Cola, Adobe, Dell and SanDisk. That is a fairly varied collection of companies to find saying no to the same market design.

A timely objection bars that third-party token from this venue. Under the SEC terms, issuers have 30 calendar days to object in writing. The proposed operator is a Texas company owned equally by ICE Holdings and OKC USA. Its notice is a required step before operations; no launch date is established.

And the thing being traded would be a third-party security entitlement. Shares held at a registered broker-dealer back the token one for one; minting and redemption connect the two. The venue itself proposes neither custody nor credit. So the backing sits at the broker, while the trading mechanism sits somewhere quite different: permissioned Uniswap version four pools on XLayer, paired with stablecoins.

There is no order book, and the proposal is for round-the-clock operation. The pool’s asset ratio sets the execution price; the smart contract has no price oracle. External stock feeds supply display prices and help detect halts. A stock-market price can therefore appear on the screen without being the price input that determines the trade in the pool.

My reading is that arbitrage through the mint-and-redeem connection could pull a divergent token price back toward the underlying. But one-for-one backing doesn’t itself force every pool execution to match the share price. That proposed connection has to reconcile a pool-driven execution price with the value of the shares behind the entitlement.

The SEC exemption is venue-specific and conditional. Broker-dealers retain applicable best-execution and reporting duties even though the venue would operate outside Regulation NMS. Alongside the proposed market design, the issuer objection process is already determining which tokens would be barred from it.

Two Sigma Explores an Outside Governance Stake

A separate governance development at Two Sigma. Bloomberg Law reports that the founders have held early talks about selling a stake to a Middle East investor or a U.S. pension fund. An outside owner could potentially break ties between the roughly equal owners. There is no established buyer, stake size, valuation or transaction timetable.

There’s a concrete record behind the stalemate description. Two Sigma’s March regulatory filing described a disputed co-CEO designation and a contested termination sent to dispute resolution. Those are operating decisions caught in the governance structure. The possible stake sale would bring someone else into that structure, although the rights attached to any stake remain unknown.

Millennium Looks at Prediction-Market Data

Back to hedge funds, briefly. Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources, that Millennium is building tools for portfolio managers to use Polymarket and Kalshi data as signals across traditional assets. The sources said the firm was not currently trading the prediction-market contracts themselves. The parties declined to comment; no production deployment or realized alpha is established.

The research question, as I read it, is whether those prices add information beyond what the portfolio managers already have in the assets they trade. The report doesn’t identify the models or instruments involved.

How GitHub Turned Replication Lag Into False 404s

Now to GitHub, where a database migration made some valid GitHub App requests look as though the requested resource did not exist. GitHub’s postmortem covers Tuesday, October 27, from 6:55 to 8:01 a.m. UTC. Git and API requests authenticated with App server-to-server tokens saw elevated false 404 responses. Actions tokens were excluded.

The migration involved seven MySQL tables. While that was happening, an overlapping cleanup deleted about 59 million installation records, and replication between clusters fell as much as an hour behind. That figure describes the cleanup operation; the postmortem does not establish 59 million failed tokens or permanent loss of that many records.

Reads reached a complete cutover before the write cutover finished. The new read target was lagging, yet it was already receiving all the reads. GitHub’s authentication path could therefore look in the lagged data and return a false not-found response. The backlog had become visible to clients as absence.

Authenticated Git failures averaged 1.24 percent and peaked at 2.49 percent. Those figures describe Git requests, not every request to GitHub. The proposed fixes address both parts of the sequence: disable overlapping cleanup before migrations, and prevent read cutover while replication lag is high.

Liquid AI’s LFM3: Small Files, Material License Boundaries

Liquid AI has released LFM3, a small-model family with text, vision, audio, omni and decision checkpoints. The collection starts with a 1.73-billion-parameter text base and lists six post-trained checkpoints. The text checkpoint advertises a 256-thousand-token context window; the audio and omni cards list 32 thousand. Those are materially different operating envelopes within the same family.

Its license is immediately relevant to a large firm considering it. The LFM Open License does not license commercial use by a legal entity with more than ten million dollars in annual revenue, and the definition includes commonly controlled entities. Putting the project in a small subsidiary does not, on that wording, make the revenue condition disappear.

I’d be tempted to try it, once the license is resolved.

I’d leave you to enjoy the download.

The official safetensors listings are 3.46 gigabytes for text, 3.84 for vision-language, and 4.33 for omni. Those are file sizes; they don’t establish the memory footprint of serving a long context or handling the other modalities.

The model card discourages agentic coding and complex multistep reasoning, even as the release includes a decision checkpoint and reports WebArena results. Liquid’s edge-speed and benchmark claims come from named devices and settings and remain vendor-reported. For a deployment, memory, latency, task quality and security still need to be measured in the intended environment.

Nvidia’s Long-Form Transcription Release

Nvidia’s new transcription release works at a very different scale from the Liquid models. Nemotron Transcribe supports transcription in 40 languages, translation to and from English for 31, and speaker attribution in 13. The supported task and language combinations vary. It can take recordings up to an hour, with a maximum of eight speakers for attribution.

And it’s an offline system, so the natural thing to assess is a completed recording. The reference BF16 server uses one H100 with 80 gigabytes. Including the encoder, the model has 34 billion total parameters and 4.3 billion active. The smaller active count does not make that reference deployment a lightweight local transcription setup.

The audio question-and-answer training is English. That adds another language boundary to the transcription, translation and speaker-attribution counts. For a multilingual recording, the supported combination of those tasks matters more than the broadest language total in the announcement.

Quantized versions and NeMo-Speech.cpp are described in the announcement as forthcoming. That leaves the published reference setup as the concrete starting point, rather than a promised smaller version. And the vendor’s short-clip throughput figures don’t establish the time it would take to process a full hour-long recording. That longer job is what I’d want to measure.

The release is under OpenMDW 1.1, with third-party notices still applicable.

GIUK Opens in Flatiron, With a Status Conflict

New York restaurant news: Eater reports that GIUK opened Tuesday at 41 West 24th Street. Lunch has customizable bibimbap and soondubu; the reported dinner dishes include corn ribs, doenjang shiitake pasta, and galbijim with burdock risotto.

The official site lists that address but still says Coming Soon. Hours, reservations and the live menu remain unresolved, so this is opening news, not a dining recommendation. The doenjang shiitake pasta and burdock risotto give us two reasons to be curious about the dinner menu.

UNDERCOVER Makes Uniforms for a Furniture Workshop

And a clothing collaboration with an unusually specific starting point: UNDERCOVER has made uniforms for the artisans at Valentin Loellmann’s Maastricht furniture workshop. The capsule was released Wednesday and is designed around movement and the conditions of the work.

Isetan lists a cotton-duck blouson and trousers, a reversible MA-1, a collarless shirt, a zip hoodie and sweatpants. Its Shinjuku promotion runs through November 3. The workshop origin is the design detail to notice here; U.S. shipping, fit, stock, prices and returns are not established, so this is not a buying recommendation.

World Series: The Wednesday-Evening Snapshot

Finally, the World Series, with the timestamp attached. At 7:12 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Game Five had not started. Milwaukee led Tampa Bay three games to one, with the game scheduled for eight. This is the pre-Game-Five position, not a claim about where the series stands on Thursday morning.

The latest completed game in that snapshot was Tampa Bay’s four-three win in twelve innings. Ben Williamson delivered the pinch-hit, walk-off single. Keeping the series alive also changed the next game’s pitching: the Rays used intended Game Five starter Nick Martinez for two scoreless innings in relief.

Rasmussen was therefore set to start Game Five on three days’ rest, against Misiorowski. Tampa Bay had used Martinez’s two scoreless innings to help survive Game Four, leaving a different starter to take the next game on short rest.

That’s LEON for Thursday, October 29. One final timestamp: Game Five had not begun at our Wednesday-evening audio cutoff. Have a good Thursday, Leon.

Listening Note: Sour Widows, Sigil

Let’s leave the model cards for a record. Sour Widows released their second album, Sigil, last Friday on Julia’s War, produced by Melina Duterte and the band. The credits put cello on the opening title track and violin beneath the acoustic closer, Wounds of Purification.

Pitchfork’s new review describes Wounds of Purification as a response to Lullaby, with fingerpicked guitar and subtle violin. That’s a relationship I’d listen for.

I’d start at the beginning and let the closer arrive.

Sigil has eleven tracks on the U.S. Apple Music listing, and the artist’s Bandcamp page has the release and credits.
