Galo, Nuno Sousa’s Portuguese restaurant at 142 West 10th Street, was scheduled to open yesterday. Its menu is now available, and it makes the earlier opening lead much more tangible. Sousa also runs Leitão; here the attraction is a broader Portuguese seafood repertoire, with petiscos and rice dishes suited to building a meal around the table. Opening guide, official menu
I would start with lingueirão à Bulhão Pato: razor clams with garlic, white wine, coriander and lemon. Then make arroz de carabineiro e lingueirão the centerpiece—scarlet prawns and razor clams in rice cooked with shellfish broth, saffron and herbs. The menu names Ariete rice from Quinta do Seminário in the Baixo Mondego. These are specific, appealing dishes, with enough substance to make a seafood dinner rather than assembling one from appetizers. Restaurant’s menu PDF
Several other seafood names conceal meat, dairy or egg ingredients. The fisherman’s stew contains ’nduja, the stuffed squid contains Ibérico pork, and the sardine-and-tomato salad includes stracciatella. Bacalhau à Brás and the shrimp ovos rotos are egg-led. The clam-and-rice route is considerably clearer; confirm the kitchen’s preparation when ordering.
The room is intended to evoke a Portuguese adega, with handmade ceramics and a design by Lisbon’s Studio Asolfi. The wine programme ranges beyond the obvious Douro choices into Bairrada, Dão and the islands. A seafood rice, a bottle and a room with some warmth is an attractive proposition for a relaxed evening. Those details come from the restaurant’s publicist, so hospitality and execution remain to be tested. Concept and design
Early-visit recommendation, with prices to check first. The published menu I could inspect was unpriced, and I could not verify reservation inventory. Wednesday and Thursday hours are listed as 4–11:30 p.m. Ask about the rice’s portion size and total price before ordering it for the table. Hours and reservations
