At 75, Arlene Shechet has made her first Corten-steel sculpture and placed it beside hand-shaped aluminum and 14 ceramic works using the ancient terra sigillata technique. Flo is more than 10 feet tall, its weathered planes leaning into curves and nearly-triangles; Eve, in pale green and blue-gray aluminum, rises 16 feet and was measured to fit the front gallery within an inch. Shechet’s strength is material without material worship. The Corten patina paints itself; the ceramic finish is clay refined into a nearly waterproof slip; the aluminum still shows the pressure of hands rather than molds. The works reward walking around them because their balance changes with the angle. She Said She Said runs through October 24 at 508 and 510 West 25th Street. It is an easy Chelsea stop whose scale should register even if the gallery is quiet enough to hear your shoes.
