The Morgan’s “Tarot Magic in Music” begins tonight at 7 p.m. in Gilder Lehrman Hall. Victoria Bond’s program moves from the card scene in Carmen through Ravel’s Tzigane, Katherine Hoover’s Kokopeli, Boulez’s Domaines and Bond’s own Instruments of Revelation. Ticket holders can see the Tarot! exhibition from 5:30 to 7 p.m. before the one-hour concert. Exact program and logistics
At $60, it is expensive for a chamber hour, and selectable inventory was not verified. The pairing is unusually coherent, though: music about divination heard after looking at the images that supplied its vocabulary. The clarinet, flute, violin, cello and piano ensemble should also make Boulez feel less like prescribed modernism and more like live, physical conversation.
