The V&A’s new free display, The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, reopened after the museum’s September 25–26 industrial action and runs daily 10 a.m.–5:45 p.m. in the Prince Consort Gallery at South Kensington. No booking is required. The compact object list avoids a purely brand-hagiographic route: a circa-1937–44 catalogue establishes the garment’s practical lineage; Hardy Amies’s 1979 car coat supplies a bespoke designer’s use; a mirror-embroidered men’s coat from 2015 and a pink metallic-silk version from 2013 show how far the pattern can move before it stops reading as equipment.
The design payoff is in comparing what survives those transformations: the double-breasted front, storm protection, belt architecture and visual authority of gabardine even when the surface becomes decorative. It is a concise stop, not a destination exhibition—pair it with another South Kensington plan. V&A exhibition page
