September added 29,000 jobs, and July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000. July is now −10,000, August +133,000. Unemployment was 4.2%, up from 4.1%, while labor-force participation reached 61.8%. Hourly earnings rose 0.1% for the month and 3.0% over twelve months.

The revisions matter alongside the small September print: the previously stronger summer has weakened. Reuters also reports that 485,000 people entered the labor force while household-survey employment rose 406,000, helping explain the unemployment-rate increase. This does not by itself establish a sudden wave of dismissals. BLS September report, released October 2 · Reuters analysis.
