In an August 18 announcement worth catching before the expected closing, Optiver agreed to take a majority stake in Leiden-based Northpool, a proprietary power and gas trader founded in 2012, with another office in Vancouver. Closing is expected in November 2026, subject to regulatory approval and conditions.
Northpool brings short-term power and gas trading, advanced weather analytics and predictive modeling; Optiver brings its quantitative technology and global market-making operation. Weather changes both power demand and renewable output, making that expertise unusually concrete in these markets. The announced combination joins those capabilities, although its eventual trading economics remain undisclosed. Founder and CEO Roald Noort is to continue leading Northpool.
