Niklas Roy’s Glashütte Trash Clock came out of a 2026 NOMOS residency. A water bottle hangs from a folding ruler inside a stepladder; paperclips become the teeth of an escapement wheel; a scrap-filled paint can supplies power. The wheel advances half a tooth per pendulum swing, making its 30 teeth useful for counting a minute. A salvaged pulley arrangement extends the running time to about half an hour.
It is a particularly enjoyable making project because the mechanism remains visible. You can follow stored energy through the release, count and reduction instead of admiring a sealed object. The complete build account is the attraction, with cardboard friction wheels and a separately powered bottle gong. No precision rating accompanies the charm.
