The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics.
The conceptual leap is easy to lose in the apparatus. Recording a neuron tells you what happened alongside a behavior; optogenetics lets a scientist switch a genetically targeted cell population on or off with light and test causation. Microbial channelrhodopsins became a handle on circuits. That moved experimental neuroscience from watching the orchestra to briefly cueing a section and hearing what changes.
The prize is 12 million Swedish kronor, roughly $1.2 million at announcement. More important, it recognizes a tool that changed the grammar of the field: cell type, circuit, intervention, consequence. Nobel Prize · Nature
