Reuters’ Friday investigation adds a useful detail to the debate over hedge funds and European bond volatility: French sovereigns account for approximately $112 billion of the roughly $280 billion of euro-area government bonds pledged for repo borrowing, using the report’s dollar conversion of Banque de France figures. Falling bond prices can therefore hit a financing instrument as well as a directional position.
The report attributes more than half of European government-bond trading to hedge funds, versus 30% in 2020. Several investors blame rapid unwinds for the severity of France’s October moves; that attribution remains contested, and fiscal fundamentals also matter. Reuters, October 16
