Astra for Law combines GPT-6 Astra with a legal-search index of US cases, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, updated daily. It is beginning with selected US firms through Trusted Access, ChatGPT and Codex; API access is promised later. The product page explicitly tells lawyers to review its answers and citations. OpenAI’s product details

The distribution choice is more interesting than another legal benchmark. OpenAI is offering the model directly to firms while allowing legal-software companies, including Harvey and Legora, to build on it; partner integrations reach matter files, prior deals, e-discovery and practice-management systems. Pilot firms include Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Latham and Wachtell. Reuters, September 17

That leaves a defensible layer for specialist vendors and firms: proprietary precedent, permissions, workflow design, audit trails and the habit of knowing when an answer should not leave the building. A daily legal index narrows the raw-information advantage; it does not solve the institutional problem of applying the right house judgment to the right client.

The SEC opens an onchain annex to the stock market

The SEC’s Innovation Exemption, issued yesterday, allows approved Tokenized Securities Venues to trade tokenized NMS stocks through permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools. The token must confer the same rights as the conventional share; issuers get notice and an opportunity to object; the smart contracts must be public and auditable on a permissionless ledger; and trading must halt with the primary listing. The exemption expires after five years. SEC release and conditions

The important companion relief is for liquidity providers. Firms supplying their own capital to these pools can receive a conditional exemption from the dealer definition even if they quote customers or commit capital. That makes a parallel execution environment economically plausible, rather than merely giving existing shares blockchain-shaped packaging.

For equities infrastructure, the first-order questions are cross-environment ones: how a router compares a pool price with displayed markets; how surveillance joins wallet, beneficial-owner and conventional order data; how corporate actions and recalls propagate; and what happens when a primary-market halt reaches a smart contract. Commissioner Mark Uyeda says venues must publish regular dollar-denominated trade data—price, size, time, pool address, end-of-day pool size and daily volume—which at least gives transaction-cost analysis something more useful than enthusiasm. Uyeda’s statement

The exemption has symbol and volume caps, and excludes synthetic stock tokens. It is a bounded live experiment, not a wholesale replacement for Regulation NMS. That is precisely why the operating evidence should be interesting.

The Bank of England divides its gilt portfolio into three jobs

The Bank of England has stopped treating £488.2 billion of QE holdings as one unwind problem. £221.7 billion of gilts maturing before 2035 will run off naturally; £120 billion of the longest maturities will be held to back banknote issuance; and £146.5 billion maturing from 2035 to 2049 will be reduced at £20 billion a year. Its own sale auctions pause while it considers transferring that middle bucket to the government at market prices through the Debt Management Office. A final decision is due before April 2027. Bank market notice

The restructuring separates monetary-policy unwind from currency issuance and market execution. A sale to the DMO would still increase government financing needs, but it could avoid forcing long-duration inventory through a separate central-bank auction programme. That matters for dealer balance sheet, syndication and the shape of supply.

The MPC also held Bank Rate at 3.75% by 6–3; the minority wanted 4%. The gilt decision was unanimous. September minutes

Turkey changes the mechanics of its fund liquidation

Yesterday’s Turkish fund stress has moved from redemptions to state-managed unwinding. The central bank supplied 300 billion lira of repo funding, while the maintenance-margin requirement was cut from 35% to 20%. Regulators froze trading and ordered liquidation at funds from seven firms; Reuters says the affected vehicles held 891 billion lira for 353,000 investors. Reuters, September 17

Those measures relieve two different pressures. Repo funding helps intermediaries finance positions; lower margin slows forced sales. Neither creates an outside buyer for concentrated, thinly traded shares whose rising prices had supported fund NAVs. A controlled liquidation may spread the adjustment over time, but the marks still have to meet a market eventually.

Lead in the ink could make more Herculaneum scrolls legible

A new experiment attacks a specific failure mode in virtual unrolling: carbon ink and carbonized papyrus can look almost identical in X-rays. Researchers made modern papyrus samples with very small amounts of lead in the ink, scorched them, then combined X-ray fluorescence, tomography and machine learning to recover the writing. Study report, September 17

The caveat is central: this worked on modern equivalents, not yet on an unopened ancient scroll. Nor will it help manuscripts written only with carbon ink. But some Herculaneum inks do contain lead, so the method could supply a much stronger signal for a subset of the library and better training data for the software that separates letters from layers. After two millennia, even a selective improvement is allowed to count as good news.

Hernan Diaz puts a particle accelerator inside his next novel

Hernan Diaz’s Ply arrives September 29. Its setting is an anarcho-capitalist future after democracy: an orphan who steals electricity moves through underground concerts, financial systems and a particle accelerator whose work bends time and space. Diaz researched at CERN and resists calling the book a dystopia; he describes its political gesture as “punkish.” Financial Times interview, AP preview

That combination—capital, constructed reality and formal play—makes it a natural queue item after Trust. The first substantial dissent is useful: The Times finds the opening comparatively young-adult in texture and thinks the philosophy arrives late. First review I would sample rather than preorder on reputation alone; 464 pages is enough room for the architecture to either deepen or become visible scaffolding.

Rostam and Hamilton Leithauser return to Williamsburg

Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam are touring the tenth anniversary of I Had a Dream That You Were Mine, with two shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 9 and 10. Sam and Louise Sullivan open. The useful first listen is the newly released piano version of “In a Black Out,” which strips an already nocturnal song down to its frame. Tour announcement and track

The November 9 listing gives 7 p.m. doors, an 8 p.m. show and an 18+ policy. Artist presale begins Monday at 10 a.m. ET, Amex presale Tuesday, and general sale Wednesday, September 23 at 10 a.m. ET. Prices and selectable inventory were not exposed before sale. Exact AXS listing

This is a strong room for that record: large enough to sound full, still small enough for Leithauser’s voice to feel unreasonably close.

Zig Zag gives the Cervo’s oyster-bar idea a proper Brooklyn room

Zig Zag Oyster Bar opened at 406 Prospect Place in July, but the first serious criticism makes it worth catching up with now. It comes from the Cervo’s and Hart’s group, with a 60-seat room designed for walk-ins rather than a reservation campaign. Hannah Goldfield finds the place most persuasive when it stays close to the raw bar and its unfussy pleasures. New Yorker review

The clearest dinner for two is the reviewed $90 classic tower—12 oysters plus six each of mussels, clams and shrimp—with the $14 anchodinas, small fried anchovy sandwiches, if they remain on the current menu. Cocktails were $16. That is enough food and personality to justify the trip without leaning on the cheese-heavy crab dip or buttered potatoes. Detailed opening menu and room report

The trade-off is that this is a cold-shellfish dinner in Prospect Heights, not an all-purpose neighborhood restaurant. Current shellfish, prices and preparation should be confirmed at the table. Hours are listed Tuesday through Saturday, 5–11 p.m. Restaurant account

Babbo loses the chef hired to relaunch it

Mark Ladner has left Babbo less than a year after taking over the kitchen. The restaurant has not given a reason, and Ladner has not announced his next move. His appointment was meant to give the post-Batali Babbo a credible culinary reset; mixed reviews and an abrupt departure leave ownership with the harder task of defining what the restaurant is for now. Direct report

This is restaurant-business news, not a cue to book. A famous room can reopen faster than it can recover a governing idea.

A shirt’s character often lives in three small choices

Simon Crompton’s new guide to plackets, pockets and buttons is a compact bit of menswear literacy. A regular placket adds structure and an Ivy/casual note; a plain front is cleaner; a breast pocket makes a larger difference to formality than most buyers realize; and button material, thickness and contrast can quietly move a shirt from business to decorative. Permanent Style guide

This is more useful than another generic list of “best shirts.” It gives you a way to diagnose why two otherwise similar cloths behave differently under a jacket or with denim. The practical move is to look at the shirts you already reach for and note those three details before the next purchase. Fit still comes first; these are the decisions that make the correct fit feel like your shirt.

Buffalo opens its new stadium with five Josh Allen touchdowns

The Bills beat Detroit 41–31 in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium. Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more; Buffalo scored touchdowns on all five red-zone trips after opening a 21–0 lead. James Cook added 139 rushing yards. Detroit still produced 31 points—Jared Goff threw four touchdowns, two to Amon-Ra St. Brown—but spent the whole night paying for the opening deficit. Bills highlights and official recap video

For Sunday fantasy decisions, Kyler Murray remained limited Thursday while in the concussion protocol. If he is not cleared for Minnesota at Chicago, Carson Wentz starts; Wentz threw three touchdowns in relief last week. Friday’s designation matters more than another speculative projection. Latest status

BETTING — PASS at this cutoff. I investigated the Sunday NFL slate, including Vikings–Bears and Washington–Dallas. The Friday injury reports were not complete, and I could not pair a current independent probability with a timestamped, executable FanDuel or DraftKings price. Murray’s status is load-bearing for the former; a market number without a defensible probability is not a play.

Listen: Black Meteoric Star, “5am Open Air Sunrise”

Gavilán Rayna Russom—formerly of LCD Soundsystem—released Wet under her Black Meteoric Star alias on September 16. Start with the 4:42 “5am Open Air Sunrise”.

The album was assembled from recordings made between 2008 and now. Russom frames it around the shared history of queer electronic music and leather culture; Pitchfork hears early house, electro, EBM and industrial music in deliberately raw form, with this track’s Chicago-acid chords opening into the next piece’s harder pressure. Artist notes and full album, Pitchfork review

That makes the track a concise test of the album’s proposition: dance music with morning light in it, before committing to the 12-minute pieces elsewhere on the record.

Watch now: The Traitors: New Blood

Peacock US subscription; two episodes available today, about 42 minutes each. The first all-civilian American edition keeps Alan Cumming, the Scottish castle and the concealed-role game, but removes the celebrity shorthand: 22 strangers have to build reputations from their behavior inside the show. Release schedule and entitlement, NBC cast guide

That change could improve the strategic interest. Viewers can watch priors form in real time rather than borrowing them from reality-TV history, while the players’ incentives remain legible: look perceptive without becoming threatening; build trust without appearing coordinated. The early critical reaction says the civilian cast is less polished and the game more strategic. Premiere review

The caveat is network-reality pacing and a weekly commitment whose total episode count has not been confirmed. Try the first 42 minutes tonight; it is lighter company than a new drama and gives you a clean stopping point.
